Weekend Artisty activities

i:

Takashi Murakami: In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow
Where: Gagosian Gallery (West 24th Street)
When: 10am–6pm
Tokyo-based artist (and former Louis Vuitton collaborator) Takashi Murakami presents colorful paintings and sculptures at a new exhibition, titled In the Land of the Dead, Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow, in one of the Gagosian's Chelsea locations. Inspired by the devastating 2011 Japanese earthquake and tsunami, the works reflect the artist's interest in exploring his native country's reaction to the aftermath—with an abstract expressionist sensibility. The result is a typically wild, frenetic collection that showcases Murakami's meld of classical Japanese painting with pop art, anime and other forms.

Friday, December 19
Gingerbread Lane
Where: New York Hall of Science
When: 2–5pm
The New York Hall of Science, NYC's only hands-on science center, offers free admission on Fridays from 2pm to 5pm and more than 450 displays in their 100,000-square-foot space—plus an outdoor rocket park and science-themed playground. Their current holiday-themed exhibition, Gingerbread Lane, sets mouthwatering gingerbread houses in a whimsical edible village (the largest in the world, according to Guinness World Records). Manhattan-based chef Jon Lovitch spent the entire year designing and baking the display. December weekends see holiday activities at the institution, including holiday-lantern crafting and—naturally—a gingerbread-house workshop.

Saturday, December 20
Super Sábado
Where: El Museo del Barrio
When: 11am–6pm
Beginning at noon (though museum doors open an hour earlier) the Latino cultural institution hosts an afternoon full of kid-friendly activities, such as crown making, festive music performance and Three Kings Day storytelling. Adults needn't feel left out, either: see French-Venezuelan artist Marisol's first museum retrospective, Marisol: Sculptures and Works on Paper, and the Playing with Fire: Political Interventions, Dissident Acts, and Mischievous Actions exhibition, which features works from El Museo's permanent collection. Before or after, try to make time to walk around the surrounding East Harlem neighborhood, which features a colorful community garden and a Graffiti Hall of Fame.

Sunday, December 21
Make Music Winter
Where: Citywide
When: Various times
Make Music New York presents its fourth annual winter event: a series of "participatory musical parades" in different locations across the five boroughs. Artist Tom Peyton will host an evening procession requiring no instruments in Midtown Manhattan, while composer Hiroya Miura is asking for brass musicians and bagpipers to march with him during the afternoon in Queens—just two of 13 blaring performances throughout the City.
SUNDAY
Creativity never tasted so good! Spend your Sunday afternoon in the studio at 92Y’s School of the Arts open house. Gather up your friends and indulge your appetite for art, crafts, music and dance– and enjoy a scone and hot drinks while you’re at it! R.S.V.P here

Gentle Santacon tomorrow and the unsilentnight

I have always been an advocate for a respectful Santacon, so I agree with this year decision

:
Due to the planned protests on Saturday, Santacon is scaling back this weekend's festivities in order to create the lowest possible impact on the city we love while still maintaining our glorious traditions this holiday season.

Santacon has respect and compassion for the hard-working municipal organizations of NYC, as well as for the important civil rights demonstrations currently shaping our city’s future. Thus, we are changing the format of this year’s Santacon.

This evening, all participating Santacon bars and venues will be announced on nycsantacon.com. Their halls will be decked, and they’ll be ready and waiting for Santa to come down their chimneys. PLEASE PATRONIZE THESE VENUES ONLY. If a venue isn’t on this list, it’s because they don’t want you there. Please move around throughout the day from venue to venue but spend most of your time inside, not on the streets.

If you’ve already contributed $10 to charity through the Santacon website, you’ll receive information about a special SantaThon we have planned just for you. If you haven’t… don’t be a Scrooge! Donate now so you can join the fun before we reach capacity and sell out of Santa Stamps.

Finally, it’s more important this year than ever to pace yourself, watch out for your elves, and stay safe. Fighting, public urination, and vandalism are unacceptable and a great way to ensure that there will be no Santacon in 2015. #DontScroogeSantacon

If Santa doesn’t Scrooge Santacon, we have even bigger plans for next year!

Remember john lennon at the memorial at strawberry fields

34 years after his death on 12/8/80 at 10:50pm,
Strawberry Fields is a living memorial to the world-famous singer, songwriter and peace activist, John Lennon. During his career with the Beatles and in his solo work, Lennon's music gave hope and inspiration for world peace and his memory and mission lives on in Strawberry Fields.

This tranquil section of Central Park was named after one of Lennon's favorite songs, "Strawberry Fields Forever." Recorded in 1966, the song's title comes from an orphanage in Liverpool, England where Lennon used to go to play with the children. His aunt, who raised him, disapproved but he insisted it was, "nothing to get hung about." Hence, the song's famous lyric.

Strawberry Fields was officially dedicated on October 9, 1985, the 45th anniversary of Lennon's birth. Lennon's widow, Yoko Ono Lennon, worked with landscape architect Bruce Kelly and Central Park Conservancy to create a meditative spot. The black-and-white mosaic was created by Italian craftsmen and given as a gift by the city of Naples. Based on a Greco-Roman design, it bears the word of another of Lennon's songs: Imagine. A designated Quiet Zone in the Park, the memorial is shaded by stately American elms and lined with benches. In the warmer months, flowers bloom all around the area. Along the path near the mosaic, you'll find a bronze plaque that lists the 121 countries that endorse Strawberry Fields as a Garden of Peace.

Vintage trains today

Once again this holiday season, the MTA will offer nostalgia lovers the opportunity to the ride back into the past with rides on vintage buses and subway trains. There’s no better way to get around while doing your holiday shopping! Dating back to the early part of last century, the Nostalgia Train is made up of subway cars in service along the lettered lines between the early1930s to the mid-1970s. Equipped with ceiling fans, padded seats and incandescent light bulbs, the R/1 through R/9 cars served the IND and later some BMT lines. Customers will have the opportunity to hop on board as it operates along the Sixth Avenue  Line.

“Holiday shoppers, tourists and those who just remember a bygone era will have the opportunity to experience a ride on a subway train from yesteryear, said MTA New York City President Carmen Bianco. “With a little bit of luck and good timing, riders will be able to catch a ride on this classic subway train at stations along the  line between Queens Plaza and Second Avenue.”

Many New Yorkers bear fond memories of the trains. However, with the cars having been out of service for nearly 40 years, many more New Yorkers have never experienced the charm of wicker seats and ceiling fans. The holiday “Nostalgia Train” will operate on Sundays only, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., on November 30, December 7, 14, 21, and 28.

Baritone Sidney Outlaw has been called an "opera powerhouse" by the San Francisco Chronicle, an apt description for a singer who has brought his rich and versatile voice to title roles in Mozart's Don Giovanni and Anthony Davis's X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X, as well as the comical Dandini in Rossini's La Cenerentola.

Howard Watkins is a collaborative pianist who made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2002. An assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, Watkins teaches at the Tanglewood Music Center, and has performed with tenor Rolando Villazón, violinist Sarah Chang, baritone Mariusz Kwiecień, and other stars.

Smarter Grid Solutions
German House, 871 United Nations Plaza (First Ave. at 49th Street), New York, NY
After sequential hurricanes in 2011 and 2012, New Yorkers experienced firsthand how an electricity disruption can have a domino effect – a series of failures that affect transportation, communications, and security. A smarter grid adds resiliency to electrical power systems and makes them better prepared to address emergencies, such as severe storms, earthquakes, heat waves, and terrorist attacks. In addition, the Smart Grid is one way to address an aging energy infrastructure that needs to be upgraded or replaced. It has the capacity to increase energy efficiency by enhancing awareness among consumers about the connection between electricity use and the environment. Thus, the Smart Grid not only provides a unique opportunity to propel the energy industry into a new era of reliability, availability, and efficiency, but it can also have a positive impact on the economy and the environment. On November 5, our panel of experts will convene to review the technology’s past successes and discuss its future challenges.

Let’s all go out and take a train ride on board one of MTA New York City Transit’s Nostalgia Trains in honor of the subway’s 110th year of operation!  New York City’s subway system first opened on October 27, 1904 and this season we are giving riders a two-day opportunity to take a trip back into the past.

On Sunday, October 26, two vintage subway trains will run in express service along the Broadway Line between 96th Street and Times Square – 42 Street.  Cars on the two trains represent examples of IRT equipment which operated between 1915 and 2001, carrying customers from the Bronx to Brooklyn.

The earliest example is a four-car train of Lo-V (Low-Voltage) subway cars, which ran in service for more than five decades before they were retired in the late 1960s.  They currently serve as a splendid illustration of just how far rapid-transit car design and technology has advanced over the past 110 years.  The train’s rattan seats, ceiling fans and drop sash windows were all common fittings during the early decades of subway travel in New York.

The Lo-Vs were named for a newly-developed control that didn’t rely directly on the 625 volts DC produced by the third rail to operate, but used a stepped-down voltage relayed from a series of batteries, fed from the third rail.  The “new technology” set up simplified control wiring and significantly reduced the possibility of accidental electrocutions to employees who had to hand-connect trainlines when they coupled the cars in the yards.

The second train is made up of R 33 and R36-type subway cars that began service in the early 1960s and remained in operation until 2001.  With the introduction of the IRT’s first order of New Technology cars, these SMEE (named for a new, more efficient braking system) cars were retired.

IRT "SMEE" cars entered service between 1948 and 1964, allowing the retirement of cars dating back to the opening of the subway.  The last versions were the so-called "Redbird" cars, familiar to all New Yorkers.  The IRT had nearly 2,900 SMEE cars which were all compatible, though their appearances differed from class to class.  In the late 1980s, the subway fleet was overhauled and riders no longer saw trains made up of various car classes painted in varying liveries.

Dubbed “The Train of Many Colors”, it is representative of several IRT paint schemes, including the MTA silvermist and blue, the Redbirds, the blue and cream World’s Fair cars and even a green version.  The train will consist of four silver and blue, one experimental green coupled to a redbird, a pair of fire-engine red and the last two redbirds to be removed from service.

Sunday, October 26
Beginning at 12 noon and running until 5 pm, both the IRT Lo-V train and the Train of Many Colors will operate between 96th Street and Times Square - 42 Street, making express stops only.  Both trains will leave from opposite ends at every half hour.  The schedule calls for the Lo-V train to leave Times Square at Noon, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 and 5:00 pm.  The Lo-V train would leave 96th Street at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30 pm.

The Train of Many Colors would leave 96th Street at 12:00, 1:00, 2:00, 3:00, 4:00 and 5:00 pm. and Times Square at 12:30, 1:30, 2:30, 3:30 and 4:30 pm.

Monday, October 27, 2014
The Lo-Vs return to service on the anniversary, operating between 11 am and 3 pm, on the hour from Times Square, making express stops only, to 96th Street.   Leaving Times Square, the schedule calls for departures at 11:00 am, 12:00, 1:00, 2:00 and 3:00 pm Leaving 96th Street, the train would depart at 11:30am, 12:30, 1:30 and 2:30 pm.

New Yorkers bear fond memories of these vintage subway cars, some of which of are usually housed at the New York Transit Museum in Brooklyn Heights, where they have honored positions as static displays reflecting a time before automated voice announcements, air conditioning or bright fluorescent lighting.

Of course, you can always catch more vintage trains on display there.

DOG DAY AFTERNOON
It's the best parade in the city, paws down. Now in its 24th season, in a city where dogs are dressed in clothes year-round, the costumes at the Tompkins Square Halloween Dog Parade are more creative than ever. Last year we saw a lot of TV stars—among them the “Hounds of Anarchy” and Cersei Lannister from “Game of Bones”— three separate “Barksy” pups toting tiny spray paint bottles, Zoltar complete with his booth and crystal ball, and a too-adorable-to-drink pumpkin spice latte. The winners of the costume contest were a team of chihuahuas as a lobster bake (one was the chef, the other the lobster getting baked), a costume of astronomical cuteness that's going to be hard to top. Craft a buddy costume with your pooch or arrive early and stake out a spot on the sidelines to watch the hundreds of contestants and their walkers. Smiles are pretty much involuntary.

free outdoor art all the way 14 th st

http://free.artinoddplaces.org/#calendar
The theme of AiOP’s tenth annual public art and performance festival is FREE.
Open. Autonomy. Gift. Independent. Unoccupied. Commons. Wild. Nothing. Everything.

The 1970s Warriors-era New York City lives in the imaginations of many as the kind of town it used to be. That gritty, wild, at times dangerous place was also a site of agency and possibility. The New York City of present day is much more polished, and encumbered by big money than recent decades; a statement not meaning to invoke nostalgia for the way things used to be, but as a simple point of fact. New York City has changed. Chain retailers (and their shoppers), real estate developers (and their high-paying tenants), and cultural tourists (and their transient economy) now rule the landscape. Between private corporations and city-mandated public space regulations, our every move is watched, recorded, policed, and normalized. Patti Smith said it. David Byrne said it. New York City is not a place for artists.

Or is it?

Sure, money has moved in. But have the people stopped responding? Has creativity simply dried up? Or, like the city itself, has it just changed? Shape-shifted and transgressed the usual models into more inter-disciplinary, life-specific, and self-directed contexts?

We think so.
Warmelink-press

Fourteenth Street in Manhattan is at a crucial nexus of this issue. As a kind of informal divider between the “uptown” and “downtown” worlds, 14th Street spans the widest part of the Manhattan island, and has been an important site for trade, light industry, radical activism, transportation, housing, and culture. It is an artery through which crowds of New Yorkers flow everyday to work, play, live, dissent, shop, parade, and create. It has also undergone tremendous change and gentrification, with high-end retail and big box stores dotting the street to accommodate a shift toward an increasingly privatized sidewalk experience.

Art in Odd Places has integrated into this space to startle New Yorkers from their usual paths, and consider their environment in wholly unique and singular moments of creative intervention. Following its decade-long history of artful protest in New York City, Art in Odd Places 2014: FREE presents sixty-two projects that actively engage and respond to the history and heterogeneity of 14th Street. AiOP: FREE asks us to consider what it means to be autonomous in this milieu, with all of its surrounding conditions. Creating a test site for the possibilities and limitations of public space, AiOP: FREE prompts artists to highlight civil liberties, forms of exchange, and personal and collective freedoms in forming a critical idea of what our urban commons looks like, and how it functions.

The festival’s ethos has always been one of sharing, openness, and accessibility; produced without a budget, outside of permitting regulations, and taken up completely on the initiative of the organizers and participating artists. AiOP is collaborative, horizontal, and constantly in motion. AiOP is FREE.

Sunday join us in the climate change march

Speculated to be the largest protest against climate change in the history of the country, The People's Climate March will be held a few days before the UN's summit on climate change -- reminding the decision makers that they are accountable and that everyone is affected by the issue.

Activists from all over the country are pouring in while locals are preparing floats and artwork to raise awareness. The roughly two mile walk will start at Central Park West and end at 11th Ave and 34th Street. Come be part of the change.
The People's Climate March is just days away.

There's been an amazing amount of work and effort put into making this a historic event, but we won't be able to make this work without volunteers to help it run smoothly. If you've been wondering how you can help make this march a success - this is it.

You don't have to have any experience volunteering at an event like this - we'll give you all the information you need to make sure you're an important part of the team on the day of the march.

To make sure you have all the information you need, we're holding volunteer trainings Thursday and Friday. You'll hear about the plan for the day, the roles that are needed, and meet the other people volunteering to help make the People's Climate March a success.

Click here to sign up for a training.

The trainings are:

Friday, September 19th - 6:00-8:30pm
All trainings will be held on the 3rd Floor, room D, at TWU Local 100, 195 Montague st, Brooklyn, NY 11201

Click here to sign up for a training.

We're going to send you an e-mail later today with a deep run down of the march logistics, but we wanted to make sure you saw this first - because volunteers are that critical to the march being a historic success.

So sign up for a training - each one is just 2.5 hours, and will give you all the information you need for the day. That includes day-of logistics, skillbuilding in march management and how to work with other volunteers. Since the march is going to be huge, if you have other friends who would be interested in helping alongside you, please encourage them to come and RSVP as well. It'll be fun - and everyone who volunteers will be given a hat and tshirt.

Thanks again, and we'll see you at a training this week,
Nia and the Volunteer Coordination Team

P.S. If you went to a day-of volunteer training like this last weekend, you don't need to go to one of these. if you have any questions, e-mail me at nia@peoplesclimate.org

September 05 2014
From 8:00 to 3:00 AM

First we saved ping pong. Now we save the humans. Join us as we celebrate 5 years of upping the ping pong game in New York City. Highlights include an art expo featuring the works of Leny Artist, a special dirty dozen showdown, DJ Brent Lee on the 1's and 2's, free old school arcade games, and a portion of the evening's proceeds will go to the bowery mission.

About The Bowery Mission
The Bowery Mission has served homeless and hungry New Yorkers since 1879. This year, The Bowery Mission provided more than 382,400 meals to men, women and children, 93,700 nights of shelter and 46,800 articles of clothing, as well as showers, haircuts, and expert medical and optometric care. Each meal and every night of shelter is an invitation to its residential recovery programs, where lives are transformed from hopelessness to hope. Last year, the Mission’s residential programs served nearly 400 men and women who are regaining sobriety, reconnecting with family and faith, pursuing educational goals, and preparing for work and independent living. The Mission’s summer camp served nearly 1,100 at-risk children from tough city neighborhoods. www.bowery.org

And of course a plethora of ping pong. A cacophony of pongmanship if you will.

The 2014 Fundraiser is dedicated towards war widows in Sri Lanka. As the country emerged from 30 years of civil war, CORD Sri Lanka has been working relentlessly to help war victims in the North since 2010. Some of these war affected families which include 3 or more children earn less than $50 a month. There is a dire need to empower those affected; majority of them being war widows with absolutely no skills or means of livelihood. CORD Sri Lanka strives to empower these women so that they become independent, self- sustaining and can provide for their families. Charitable projects have reached across Colombo, Jaffna, Batticaloa, Trincomalee, Vavuniya, and the up-country.

Free burgers from Wahlburgers this weekend in NYC
Everyone knows what the best type of burger is: a free one.
In honor of the Season 2 premiere of A&E Network's series Wahlburgers, the network is hitting the road with Wahlburgers on Wheels. A reality series about brothers (yes, those brothers: Mark, Donnie and Paul) who embark on a Boston-based hamburger business, this giveway is more than appropriate to spark excitement for new episodes of family food drama.
The traveling food truck will be in New York City this week, providing burger and Wahlburgers fans with a free burger and tater tots.
The "Our Burger" is Wahlburgers' signature burger topped with wahl sauce, dill pickles, government cheese, lettuce, tomato and onion.
Whalburgers on Wheels will also help make a GIF of you enjoying your first bites of "Our Burger" to share on social media, because what would be the point of eating it otherwise. Also, who doesn't want to star in a GIF?
Find the Whalburgers on Wheels truck Tuesday, August 12 from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at the Flatiron Pedestrian Plaza between 23rd and 24th streets.

summer Streets
August 9 and 16
For three Saturdays in August, the sounds of honking horns and idling delivery trucks give way to the gentle footfalls of pedestrians and the ring-a-ding-ding of bicycle bells. From 7am to 1pm, a corridor connecting Brooklyn Bridge to Central Park—long stretches of Lafayette Street and Park Avenue, and a few connecting streets—will be closed to motor vehicles and open to the public for biking, strolling, dancing and aimless peregrinating. There are five "rest stops" along the way, though that's something of a misnomer, as they'll be offering activities galore—mini golf, a climbing wall, parkour, learn-to-ride bicycling classes (and free bike rentals), yoga and a 165-foot zip line across Foley Square.
Saturday, August 9
Hong Kong Dragon Boat Festival
Where: Flushing Meadows Corona Park
When: 10:30am–4pm
A colorful multicultural tradition, this festival paddles back to Flushing Meadows Corona Park for a weekend-long celebration (the official Dragon Boat Festival holiday is the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar—or June 2—but events are held at different times). The fest gets its name from the roughly 180 dragon boat teams from around the world that come to race on the Queens park's lake. Back on shore, expect plenty of traditional food and live entertainment, martial arts demonstrations from the monks of the Shaolin Temple, lion dance performances, Chinese crafts and children's activities. Races take place throughout the day.

New York International Fringe Festival
August 8–24
A brief synopsis can't do the New York International Fringe Festival justice. FringeNYC brings together more than 200 companies from down the street and around the globe for some 1,200 performances on 18 stages in 17 days. Musicals, mash-ups, solo shows, comedies, tragedies, parodies, performance art, puppetry...you get the picture. FringeCENTRAL, new this year, gives theatergoers a place to find their bearings, get information on individual shows and buy tickets in advance (sans online "convenience" fees); it's scheduled to open on July 25, well before opening night. Until then, you can find a complete schedule of shows online, at fringenyc.org.

Super moon and a meteor shower
When the full moon coincides with being closest to Earth, or perigee, it is called a supermoon.
The annual Perseid meteor shower could entertain us with as many as 100 shooting stars an hour; it's expected to peak between Aug. 10 and 13, then last for one week. The Perseid shower is created when debris from the tail of the Swift-Tuttle comet hits the Earth's atmosphere. The super moon, which happens four to six times a year, occurs when the moon is 30,000 miles closer to Earth than usual.

Astronomer Tony Berendsen told ABC News that the best time to see the showers is at 2 a.m. "Because the moon will be incredibly bright in the earlier evening, the smaller showers will not be a match," he said.
