Free Event! The Mysteries of Ice Cream on April 29

Posted by 16ec9eca tiny Jen on apr 6, 2014 under Event

It might not be prime ice cream eating weather quite yet, but for this month's Masters of Social Gastronomy lecture, we're bringing summertime to Brooklyn no matter what the thermometer says.

Hear the tale of vanilla ice cream, a commonplace flavor with a rare and exotic past. We'll take a hard look at the science that makes ice cream tick and see if we can harness the DIY spirit to craft up astronaut ice cream in your very own kitchen.

The wide range of curious flavors will be on full display, with 19th-century artichoke-and-tomato ice cream and other adventuresome (and masochistic) creations.

Plus! We'll be giving away a signed copy of the new Ample Hills Creamery Cookbook and have some treats along the way.

Very Important Details:
Tuesday, April 29
Free, 21+
Doors at 7:30pm, talks start at 8pm

Where: SVA Theatre 2
When: 2:30pm

Tribeca Talks is a series of not-to-be-missed discussions with some of the film industry's most prominent actors, producers and writers. This event features Academy Award–winning film editor Thelma Schoonmaker, who has cut every film—save for documentaries on Bob Dylan and the Rolling Stones—that Martin Scorsese has directed since Raging Bull (inclusive). During this discussion, Schoonmaker will talk about her career, the moviemaking process and cutting-room adventures.

Sunday, April 20
Easter Parade and Easter Bonnet Festival
Where: begins at St. Patrick's Cathedral
When: 10am
Each year on Easter, celebrants don festive finery and show off their very best bonnets along Fifth Avenue. Immortalized in song by Irving Berlin (with some help from Judy Garland and Fred Astaire), the pageant is a New York City tradition that stretches back to the 1870s. Starting at about 10am and continuing until 4pm, the parade marches north on Fifth Avenue, from 49th Street to 57th Street. The best place to watch is from the area around St. Patrick's Cathedral; better yet, bring your bonnet and join the parade.
Sunday at 7pm a great Brazilian musician and scientist :
The Parkside Lounge
317 East Houston, New York, New York 10002
It's acoustic/pop-rock/singer-songwriter kind of thing, if you ask.

There's no cover and I'll not pass the hat (see title of event -- pun half intended), but the bar will ask you to have a drink.

Hope to see you there, and feel free to bring friends. My set goes from 7PM to 8PM.S

Be a molecular biologist for a day

Open DNA Barcoding Night biologist
Open DNA Barcoding Night
6:00 PM to 9:00 PM on Monday, April 7
Location: Genspace HQ
Organizers: Ellen D. Jorgensen, Ph.D.
This is a true citizen science project! DNA barcoding is a way of identifying species without a professional taxonomist. It relies on a unique DNA signature- the barcode- which anyone can determine with a little training at Genspace. We have collected about 250 samples from the Alaskan tundra and you can help us barcode them. Just show up and we'll put you to work.

There's a good chance that we will be the first to barcode many of the species, in which case your name might end up in the Barcode of Life database as a contributor. When a species is properly barcoded, it opens the door to amateur participation in ecological research, and helps scientists and activists catalog fragile species threatened by such events as global warming.

This event is free, but we usually kick in for pizza and beer.

For more info on the project see:
