Vintage trains today

Once again this holiday season, the MTA will offer nostalgia lovers the opportunity to the ride back into the past with rides on vintage buses and subway trains. There’s no better way to get around while doing your holiday shopping! Dating back to the early part of last century, the Nostalgia Train is made up of subway cars in service along the lettered lines between the early1930s to the mid-1970s. Equipped with ceiling fans, padded seats and incandescent light bulbs, the R/1 through R/9 cars served the IND and later some BMT lines. Customers will have the opportunity to hop on board as it operates along the Sixth Avenue  Line.

“Holiday shoppers, tourists and those who just remember a bygone era will have the opportunity to experience a ride on a subway train from yesteryear, said MTA New York City President Carmen Bianco. “With a little bit of luck and good timing, riders will be able to catch a ride on this classic subway train at stations along the  line between Queens Plaza and Second Avenue.”

Many New Yorkers bear fond memories of the trains. However, with the cars having been out of service for nearly 40 years, many more New Yorkers have never experienced the charm of wicker seats and ceiling fans. The holiday “Nostalgia Train” will operate on Sundays only, between the hours of 10 a.m. and 5 p.m., on November 30, December 7, 14, 21, and 28.

Baritone Sidney Outlaw has been called an "opera powerhouse" by the San Francisco Chronicle, an apt description for a singer who has brought his rich and versatile voice to title roles in Mozart's Don Giovanni and Anthony Davis's X, The Life and Times of Malcolm X, as well as the comical Dandini in Rossini's La Cenerentola.

Howard Watkins is a collaborative pianist who made his Carnegie Hall debut in 2002. An assistant conductor at the Metropolitan Opera, Watkins teaches at the Tanglewood Music Center, and has performed with tenor Rolando Villazón, violinist Sarah Chang, baritone Mariusz Kwiecień, and other stars.

Smarter Grid Solutions
German House, 871 United Nations Plaza (First Ave. at 49th Street), New York, NY
After sequential hurricanes in 2011 and 2012, New Yorkers experienced firsthand how an electricity disruption can have a domino effect – a series of failures that affect transportation, communications, and security. A smarter grid adds resiliency to electrical power systems and makes them better prepared to address emergencies, such as severe storms, earthquakes, heat waves, and terrorist attacks. In addition, the Smart Grid is one way to address an aging energy infrastructure that needs to be upgraded or replaced. It has the capacity to increase energy efficiency by enhancing awareness among consumers about the connection between electricity use and the environment. Thus, the Smart Grid not only provides a unique opportunity to propel the energy industry into a new era of reliability, availability, and efficiency, but it can also have a positive impact on the economy and the environment. On November 5, our panel of experts will convene to review the technology’s past successes and discuss its future challenges.
