December 14, December 21st and December 28th, 2014
10AM - 5PM (happening every 90 minutes on the M Line)
6th Avenue between Queens Plaza & 2nd Avenue subway stations
MORE INFO HERE!

Once again this holiday season, the MTA will offer nostalgia lovers the opportunity to the ride back into the past with rides on vintage buses and subway trains. There’s no better way to get around while doing your holiday shopping! Dating back to the early part of last century, the Nostalgia Train is made up of subway cars in service along the lettered lines between the early1930s to the mid-1970s. Equipped with ceiling fans, padded seats and incandescent light bulbs, the R/1 through R/9 cars served the IND and later some BMT lines. Customers will have the opportunity to hop on board as it operates along the Sixth Avenue M Subway Line Icon Line.
“Holiday shoppers, tourists and those who just remember a bygone era will have the opportunity to experience a ride on a subway train from yesteryear, said MTA New York City President Carmen Bianco. “With a little bit of luck and good timing, riders will be able to catch a ride on this classic subway train at stations along the M Subway Line Icon line between Queens Plaza and Second Avenue.
Baby soda stars playing at 11 am to 1 pm in the platform.

@santacon is today!!!

SantaCon organizers have given us an advance look at maps which reveal where most of the shenanigans will be taking place this Saturday so, you know, fair warning. As previously reported, this year's convention kicks off in Greenpoint's McCarren Park at 10 a.m., then proceeds through Williamsburg to the Lower East Side and East Village, which will see the bulk of the 'conning, from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m.
SantaCon ends promptly at 7 p.m., at which point all participants will quietly disperse to their homes, spending the remainder of the evening in quiet reflection.

Jazz, toys day and Scavenger hunts this weekend deals and free things to do in NYC

Opening Night: Jazz by Shakespeare (donation of 10$)
Come see this exciting new theatre performance, a piece that incorporates two suites for jazz ensemble written by Duke Ellington called “Such Sweet Thunder” and “Timon of Athens.” Performers include a live jazz ensemble from Jazz at Lincoln Center, actors from the Hudson Guild Theatre Company, and dancers from the Matthew Westerby Company.
“Such Sweet Thunder” is one of the most masterful of the suites composed by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, his most frequent and significant collaborator. Commissioned in 1956 by the Stratford Shakespeare Festival, where in July of that year the Ellington Orchestra performed, “Such Sweet Thunder” is a twelve-part work which is inspired by scenes from Othello, Julius Caesar, Henry V, Macbeth, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, The Taming of the Shrew, Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet. In paying tribute to Shakespeare, Ellington and Strayhorn painted a series of finely drawn portraits of some of the Bard’s most memorable tragic, comic, and heroic figures.

Reception to follow
Currently, over 50 percent of the world’s population lives in cities. By 2050 over two-thirds of people will reside in urban environments. Although city living has many advantages, residing in cities is often associated with a high cost of living, and high crime rates, and large population density. Research has also shown that people who grow up in cities process negative emotions such as stress differently from those who move to the city as adults. These and other factors often result in severe or prolonged stress. Could the stress of city life be increasing the risk of mental health disorders? Does city living make the brain more susceptible to mental health conditions? Do people living in cities and rural areas differ in the way that their brains process stressful situations? If scientists are able to detect which aspects of city life are most stressful, these findings may help to improve the way urban areas are designed. Please join our speakers as they discuss these and other significant questions affecting stress and the city.

Under One Sky

Dear friends in NYC,

Zero poverty.
Zero hunger.
Zero deforestation.
100% Clean Energy.

These are the types of crazy-ambitious Global Goals Pope Francis and world leaders are announcing in New York this week as the path for our planet through 2030.

But these goals will only ever be words on paper if they don’t land with the power of the world’s people behind them.

That’s why countless people are coming together at thousands of “Under One Sky” events around the world to celebrate the Global Goals this Thursday, on the eve of this historic summit.

Here in NYC, thousands will gather at the footsteps of the UN at sunset to demand leaders Light the Way for a world that’s radically different from the one we’ve got today!

Come along to the amazing Under One Sky event at 6:00pm this Thursday at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in Manhattan. If you’re on facebook, you can RSVP to the event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1721702361398249/

The Global Goals are the follow-up to the Sustainable Development Goals, which oversaw huge strides in things like slashing the number of people in extreme poverty globally, putting more girls in school, and nailing the target for increasing access to clean drinking water. But success was mixed, with some goals lagging behind, and much of it went unfunded until people spoke up for government action.

These goals are even more ambitious. If they sound too good to be true, there’s a risk they are -- some leaders are banking on them coming off as “aspirational” (as in, you know, things they won’t actually do anything about). That’s why we need to show up for them -- starting this Thursday. The people who work on these issues need to know we’re with them.

From Sydney to New York, people are coming out for this global day of action to show their leaders that people power is behind this key stepping stone for a better world. Join the crowd in NYC at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza and Light the Way. RSVP on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1721702361398249/

Momentum is ramping up for us to finally get a grip on climate change. With luminaries like Pope Francis taking on the denial machine lobby and big oil, we could add a bolt of lightning to supercharge excitement as we enter the final months before Paris.

With hope,

Don't miss the amazing exhibition about the history of tv at the Jewish museum

An exhibition that The New Yorker calls "illuminating" and The New York Times calls "revealing and entertaining."
The museum in 5th av and 93 St is free on Saturday!
Revolution of the Eye: Modern Art
and the Birth of American Television
Through September 27, 2015

The first exhibition to explore how avant-garde art influenced and shaped the look and content of network television in its formative years, from the late 1940s to the mid-1970s. During this period, the pioneers of American television — many of whom were young, Jewish, and aesthetically adventurous — adopted modernism as a source of inspiration. Revolution of the Eye considers how the dynamic new medium paralleled and embraced cutting-edge art and design.

Read our interview with curator Maurice Berger, the exhibition's organizer, on the Jewish Museum blog!

Four Exhibitions
Opening September 25

The Power of Pictures:
Early Soviet Photography, Early Soviet Film
Through February 7, 2016

Covering the period from the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution through the 1930s, this exhibition explores how early modernist photography influenced a new Soviet style while energizing and expanding the nature of the medium — and how photography, film, and poster art were later harnessed to disseminate Communist ideology. The Power of Pictures revisits this moment in history when artists acted as engines of social change and radical political engagement, so that art and politics went hand in hand.

+ More

Becoming Jewish:
Warhol's Liz and Marilyn
Through February 7, 2016

This intimate exhibition examines the religious awakenings of Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe through photographs, documents, and ephemera alongside Andy Warhol’s iconic portraits of the actresses. Becoming Jewish draws parallels between the actresses’ identities as Jewish women and Warhol’s exploration of celebrity through his image-making.

+ More

Masterpieces & Curiosities:
Alfred Stieglitz's The Steerage
Through February 14, 2016

The Steerage is often seen as the quintessential image of American immigration. Through vintage ephemera and contemporary artwork, this exhibition explores how The Steerage came to be so iconic, yet so misunderstood, and why it continues to resonate deeply — especially with Jewish Americans today.

Museums Night Munich

The next Long Night of Munich Museums
Saturday, 17 October 2015.
The program for the Long Night of Museums can be found at this point from the beginning of September 2015th
That was The Long Night of Munich Museums 2014
http://www.muenchner.de/museumsnacht/
This is from last year:
After a golden October day started at 18.45 clock the first shuttle buses to 16th Long Night of Munich Museums. Nearly 90 institutions presented art, culture and technology to the early hours.
According to preliminary estimates more than 20,000 visitors in the participating museums, collections, galleries, and churches were traveling to the other to enjoy "Long Night flair". In addition to ongoing exhibitions offered numerous houses extra special programs like special tours, installations, performances and concerts.
In the afternoon there were several museums in 14-18 clock a special offer for children and adolescents.

The houses were linked by five specially set up special bus lines of the MVG. Most popular bus tour was the line Central, which in addition the big houses to each other: have been approached on a path the crowd pullers in the city center such as the Bavarian State Painting Collections, the lenbachhaus and Kunstbau, the Glyptothek and the Collection of Antiquities, the State Museum of Egyptian Art, the Munich City Museum, the House of Art, the Museum Five Continents, the Museum Villa Stuck and the Bavarian National Museum, where huge crowds prevailed: Here the motto "Historically beautiful - beautiful historic". The visitors experienced here a varied long-night program. In addition to thematic tours hosted the improv opera La Triviata while Titian Jost Trio Live cared Jazz for Kurzweil
's Jewish Museum on St.-Jakobs-Platz were revelers in " Kurt Landauer Fanshop "Browse - a projection on the facade makes mention of Kurt Landauer and pointed the way to the museum. In the exhibition "War! Jews caught in the middle 1914-1918 "allowed the visitors to immerse themselves in the adventure and experience the world of Jewish soldiers and their families in the First World War. The natural history collections also enjoyed great popularity: the audience was very interested and was impressed by the atmosphere and the exhibitions.
Reger crowds prevailed also at the German Museum: While inside the house from the basement to the roof terrace "shone and rocked", waiting on the forecourt a special service to visitors: The Museum offered with classic cars a shuttle ride to the Deutsches Museum traffic center on the Theresienhöhe.
On the tour West Botanical Garden celebrated its 100th anniversary, the Museum of Man and Nature offered next door a tour of 4 billion years of geologic history. Particularly well received are the special exhibition "Everything can be money," and the level of information about counterfeit money. "Coal, dough and dough" was also the theme of the evening in Munich Bank Museum, which for the first time took part in the Long Night. Coins and medals from the antiquity to modern times, there were in the National Coin Collection to admire, as a reminder, the revelers were even able to characterize a long night coin.
Great encouragement also found the temporary, part interactive installations as in MaximiliansForum who Rathausgalerie Kunsthalle or the Münchner Künstlerhaus: There illuminated Philipp Geist atmospheric courtyard of the house.
In this museum night there were a number of smaller and less well-known institutions to explore: Open was the State Office for digitization, broadband and survey where employees not only in the historical workshop old printing techniques were demonstrating, but also the possibilities of spatial data declared.
Rain crowd there were also in the anatomical collection of the University of Munich, which this year celebrated Long Night premiere. Seven professors and assistants of the faculty were the questions of interested visitors.

Up to 2 clock in the morning, the guests were able to pull through the museums - who then not wanted to go home, who could round off the night in the nightclub of the hotel Bayerischer Hof.

And so we look forward to the next Long Night of Munich's Museums on Saturday, October 17, 2015!

Los autenticos decadentes y Kinky

Presented by Celebrate Brooklyn! and LAMC

Gates open at 6PM.

*****Sadly, Bajofondo, who was originally scheduled to appear, will not perform due to circumstances beyond their control.*****

Our annual Latin Alternative Music Conference showcase features Mexican techno-funk rockers KINKY, who are known for their "insanely catchy disco-funk rhythms" that make "human beings have trouble sitting still." (LA Times) The five-piece band grew out of the Avanzada Regia musical movement in Monterrey, Mexico in the late 90s and have continued to surprise their fans with their evolving sound that spans languages as well as genres.

The night begins with the “infectiously cheery, lighthearted and danceable” (NPR) Chilean indie pop of ASTRO, who would be right at home on a bill with MGMT and Passion Pit, and the ska-infused rock of the beloved Buenos Aires band LOS AUTÉNTICOS DECADENTES, originally formed in 1986 and enjoying a recent return to the spotlight.

Jazz Age Lawn Party is New York City’s original prohibition era inspired gathering. Hosted and conceived by Michael Arenella, the event started as a small gathering of perhaps fifty friends and fans. The event, initially produced by the island, was handed over to Michael in its third year to organize and grow. Under his watch, the event was carefully crafted and nurtured, becoming what is now referred to by The Wall Street Journal as, “the biggest (not to mention the cleanest and most family-oriented) regular event in the ‘Retro Noveau’ movement...” It was at this time that St-Germain joined forces with The Lawn Party, delightfully whetting the whistles of fops and flappers with their refreshing summer cocktails.
Selected by The New York Times as one of the most memorable events of 2011 and 2012, The Jazz Age Lawn Party offers a magical opportunity to travel back in time. Two weekends a year, guests are invited to discover and experience one of the most colorful and formative epochs in American history. Free ferry at 10-11:30

David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center, Frieda and Roy Furman Stage
FREE

LYFE™ is an interactive music performance that explores the intersection of technology and the self with music created by Brooklyn band Glass Ghost. Opening with a snapshot of a young man obsessed with the fictional LYFE™ social app, every move is live-streamed to an ever-growing group of followers. While shared emotions, mundane observations and life decisions become fodder for personalized advertisements, roles of the participant and the followers blur into an ecstatic new media celebration of individuality.
LYFE™ is co-presented by the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center and Performance Space 122 (PS122). LYFE™ is commissioned by PS122 with support from the Jerome Foundation and residency support provided by PS122’s inaugural RAMP residency program.
