The Must-See NYC David Bowie Tribute Events

The Must-See NYC David Bowie Tribute Events
By Alison Nastasi on January 12, 2016
The world was rocked by news this week that David Bowie died from liver cancer just days after his 69th birthday and the release of his album Blackstar. Essays and personal stories have dominated the Internet since then. Fans of the English singer gathered at his star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame yesterday evening. And Bowie’s SoHo apartment building was shrouded in flowers, candles, and messages of love. There are several tribute events happening in New York City where you can gather to remember the Thin White Duke and celebrate one of the most brilliant artists of our time.

Tonight, January 12

Brooklyn’s Good Room is hosting Bowie Remembered as part of Classic Album Sundays, which is free with an RSVP (doors open at 6PM, arrive early). Meanwhile at Bushwick’s House of Yes, there’s a Labyrinth Immersive Screening and Dance Party at 7:30PM ($10 bucks/sliding scale).

Friday, January 15

The Pyramid Club is channeling The Hunger-era Bowie with the best of goth, synth pop, deathrock, and the Goblin King himself. Head to the basement club starting at 8PM, $6 cover after 9pm.

Saturday, January 16

12XU presents A Tribute to David Bowie at HiFi (10PM) in the East Village. The 21+ event is free and features Newtown Radio’s Paulie playing a Bowie-filled set until the wee hours.

Feeling Gloomy Says Goodbye to David Bowie at the Grand Victory starting at 11PM. Making the sad side of life seem fun, the event makers promise “There will be love, there will be sadness, there will be catharsis.” Also, take the following as a threat or a promise: “We might even play that song from Cool World.”

Thursday, March 31

Carnegie Hall’s tribute concert had been planned for some time, and now the show takes on a whole new resonance. “Michael Dorf and City Winery present their 12th annual tribute at Carnegie Hall featuring 20 artists, each performing songs by David Bowie. The concert is a benefit for a variety of music education programs serving underprivileged youth.” There’s limited availability, so act fast.

Until January 20

Lazarus, Bowie’s new musical starring Michael C. Hall (co-written by Bowie), is currently finishing its run at the New York Theatre Workshop. Tickets are sold out, but there’s always the cancellation line. You have until January 20 to try to grab a seat, or hit up the Lazarus seat lottery on TodayTix.

http://improveverywhere.com/missions/the-no-pants-subway-ride/
The No Pants Subway Ride is an annual event staged by Improv Everywhere every January in New York City. (The date changes from year to year and is announced in early December.) The mission started as a small prank with seven guys and has grown into an international celebration of silliness, with dozens of cities around the world participating each year.

The idea behind No Pants is simple: Random passengers board a subway car at separate stops in the middle of winter without pants. The participants behave as if they do not know each other, and they all wear winter coats, hats, scarves, and gloves. The only unusual thing is their lack of pants.

The next No Pants Subway Ride will take place on January 10, 2016 in New York and cities around the world. Join our email list to be notified when this year’s video is out and for participation details in future events.
