Medieval festival

http://whidc.org/festival/
October 4th, 2015.
The Medieval Festival brings to life the customs and spirit of the Middle Ages. Manhattan's Fort Tryon Park is transformed into a medieval market town decorated with bright banners and processional flags. Performers, guests and festival goers dress in medieval costume.

Visitors are greeted by authentic medieval music, dance, magic, and minstrels, as well as jugglers and jesters. The afternoon is concluded with a thrilling joust between four knights on horseback. Costumed vendors will be on hand to demonstrate and sell a wide variety of medieval crafts as well as food and drink.

The festival is free -- there are no charges for admission or entertainment. Donations at our wishing wells are welcome, however!

Under One Sky

Dear friends in NYC,

Zero poverty.
Zero hunger.
Zero deforestation.
100% Clean Energy.

These are the types of crazy-ambitious Global Goals Pope Francis and world leaders are announcing in New York this week as the path for our planet through 2030.

But these goals will only ever be words on paper if they don’t land with the power of the world’s people behind them.

That’s why countless people are coming together at thousands of “Under One Sky” events around the world to celebrate the Global Goals this Thursday, on the eve of this historic summit.

Here in NYC, thousands will gather at the footsteps of the UN at sunset to demand leaders Light the Way for a world that’s radically different from the one we’ve got today!

Come along to the amazing Under One Sky event at 6:00pm this Thursday at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza in Manhattan. If you’re on facebook, you can RSVP to the event here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1721702361398249/

The Global Goals are the follow-up to the Sustainable Development Goals, which oversaw huge strides in things like slashing the number of people in extreme poverty globally, putting more girls in school, and nailing the target for increasing access to clean drinking water. But success was mixed, with some goals lagging behind, and much of it went unfunded until people spoke up for government action.

These goals are even more ambitious. If they sound too good to be true, there’s a risk they are -- some leaders are banking on them coming off as “aspirational” (as in, you know, things they won’t actually do anything about). That’s why we need to show up for them -- starting this Thursday. The people who work on these issues need to know we’re with them.

From Sydney to New York, people are coming out for this global day of action to show their leaders that people power is behind this key stepping stone for a better world. Join the crowd in NYC at Dag Hammarskjold Plaza and Light the Way. RSVP on Facebook here: https://www.facebook.com/events/1721702361398249/

Momentum is ramping up for us to finally get a grip on climate change. With luminaries like Pope Francis taking on the denial machine lobby and big oil, we could add a bolt of lightning to supercharge excitement as we enter the final months before Paris.

With hope,

Don't miss the amazing exhibition about the history of tv at the Jewish museum

An exhibition that The New Yorker calls "illuminating" and The New York Times calls "revealing and entertaining."
The museum in 5th av and 93 St is free on Saturday!
Revolution of the Eye: Modern Art
and the Birth of American Television
Through September 27, 2015

The first exhibition to explore how avant-garde art influenced and shaped the look and content of network television in its formative years, from the late 1940s to the mid-1970s. During this period, the pioneers of American television — many of whom were young, Jewish, and aesthetically adventurous — adopted modernism as a source of inspiration. Revolution of the Eye considers how the dynamic new medium paralleled and embraced cutting-edge art and design.

Read our interview with curator Maurice Berger, the exhibition's organizer, on the Jewish Museum blog!

Four Exhibitions
Opening September 25

The Power of Pictures:
Early Soviet Photography, Early Soviet Film
Through February 7, 2016

Covering the period from the 1917 Bolshevik Revolution through the 1930s, this exhibition explores how early modernist photography influenced a new Soviet style while energizing and expanding the nature of the medium — and how photography, film, and poster art were later harnessed to disseminate Communist ideology. The Power of Pictures revisits this moment in history when artists acted as engines of social change and radical political engagement, so that art and politics went hand in hand.

Becoming Jewish:
Warhol's Liz and Marilyn
Through February 7, 2016

This intimate exhibition examines the religious awakenings of Elizabeth Taylor and Marilyn Monroe through photographs, documents, and ephemera alongside Andy Warhol’s iconic portraits of the actresses. Becoming Jewish draws parallels between the actresses’ identities as Jewish women and Warhol’s exploration of celebrity through his image-making.

Masterpieces & Curiosities:
Alfred Stieglitz's The Steerage
Through February 14, 2016

The Steerage is often seen as the quintessential image of American immigration. Through vintage ephemera and contemporary artwork, this exhibition explores how The Steerage came to be so iconic, yet so misunderstood, and why it continues to resonate deeply — especially with Jewish Americans today.
