Currently, over 50 percent of the world’s population lives in cities. By 2050 over two-thirds of people will reside in urban environments. Although city living has many advantages, residing in cities is often associated with a high cost of living, and high crime rates, and large population density. Research has also shown that people who grow up in cities process negative emotions such as stress differently from those who move to the city as adults. These and other factors often result in severe or prolonged stress. Could the stress of city life be increasing the risk of mental health disorders? Does city living make the brain more susceptible to mental health conditions? Do people living in cities and rural areas differ in the way that their brains process stressful situations? If scientists are able to detect which aspects of city life are most stressful, these findings may help to improve the way urban areas are designed. Please join our speakers as they discuss these and other significant questions affecting stress and the city.
