4 fun events today, 4 tomorrow

Today:

Pulse, If you haven’t had a chance to check out the Rubin’s “Bodies in Balance: The Art of Tibetan Medicine” exhibit, stop by during this boozy, beats-filled social. The museum teamed up with electronic-music showcase Warper Party for Pulse, asking multimedia artists to draw inspiration from traditional Tibetan pulse-reading (which entails listening to the vibrations and sound waves of your heartbeat). Catch free and ticketed ($15–$25) sets from forward-thinking musicians and video artists, including electropop rocker Honeychild Coleman, future-pop duo the Mast, Warper Party boss DJ Shakey and video-art collective the Sperm Whale. Show up early to make use of two-for-one drink specials at the K2 Lounge bar (6–7pm) and join a free tour of “Bodies in Balance” (6:15pm).

Rubin Museum of Art 150 W 17th St, at Seventh Ave, 10011 Bettina May isn't just one of the city's top burlesque artists—she's also a great photographer. Bonus: vegan doughnuts!

A Game of Words: You Spell or You Die. At this epically nerdy spelling bee, contestants choose between two preliminary rounds: “swords” for fantasy buffs and “space” for science-fiction geeks. Finalists tackle vocabulary from both genres, spelling words like morsmordre (that’s the incantation used to conjure the Dark Mark in the Harry Potter series) and hooloovoo (a superintelligent shade of blue mentioned in The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy, which author Douglas Adams also managed to sneak into season 17 of Doctor Who). E-mail brooklyn@wordbookstores.com to sign up and prove you actually read the books. WORD 126 Franklin St, at Milton St, 11222

A Tribute to Amiri Baraka. The potent, political Amiri Baraka passed away in January, and his death is an ache that won't fade anytime soon.
